Rock Sawing

Manhole Placement

Conduit Rodding

Directional Boring

Underground Construction

West Carb has extensive experience in splicing, premise wiring, and cutover services for broadband to the home. Our crews are experienced splicing & connectorization in the head end, central office, trunk and feeder cable, splitters, distribution cable, fiber drops, and fiber pigtails at the premise.

The nature of FTTH / FTTP projects require multiple splicing, connectorization and cutover crews along with adequate equipment to complete projects to your satisfaction in a specified time frame. Fiber-Tel Contractors has the capability to offer equipment and multiple crews to help complete your project.

As part of the cutover service, we are currently installing:

Fiber NIDs with UPS systems

COAX cabling

Cat 5 wiring

Inside telephone wire

Set top boxes

Cutover services from the existing copper POTS service to the new fiber optic NID with triple play services

Some of the procedures that are included in the cutover service process include:

Verification of the ONT serial number so it matches the number on the service order.

Measure the required, received optical levels at the end of the fiber drop where it connects to the ONT as specified by the local telephone company.

Installing the UPS and applying power to the ONT.

Measure and record RF levels for selected channels as specified by the local telephone company.

Install SWRD if applicable. (including recording the MAC address on the service order)

Install/repair any COAX cabling that is required, including replacement of existing splitters and connectors.

Install set top boxes for digital, or pay-per-view packages.

Verify the customer has Internet service and record Internet speeds.

Remove the copper drop from the existing telephone NID and place inside wire between the fiber ONT and the copper NID, if copper NID is to be used as a “dry” spot.

Install hub in premise, NIC card, and configure IP settings.

Verify that all bonding and grounding has been completed for both the fiber ONT and the copper NID according to the local telephone company’s standards.

Verify that all telephones and services including calling features that the subscriber has requested, is working and within the acceptable levels as specified by the local telephone company.

Demonstrate to the customer the operations and functions of the set top box, remote control, and Internet service.

Have subscriber sign the installation form.

Close out the service order with the local telephone company’s dispatch center.

Major advantages of using WCE for your cutover services to the customer’s premise are:

The operating company’s technician/installers can focus on their normal work routine.

Local operating company does not have to hire additional personnel or purchase additional equipment at time of implementation.

WCE can supply multiple crews to complete multiple cutovers, so you can maximize return on investment as quickly as possible!

You get full warranty on all workmanship from a reputable woman Owned 8(a) company that has been in business for over 7 years!

When asked what our company does and we mention that one of our areas of concentration is Underground Construction (UC), most people do not have any clue what UC is all about.
As an underground contractor, WCE install underground utilities for residential and commercial projects. In our case, we install the Fiber to the Property on the Verizon FTP project. This is done by way of a pneumatic piercing tool called a ground mole and a directional drill.

There are very few women owned businesses in the Inside and outside plant telecommunication market. Westcarb would caution other women and minority owned businesses to do their homework before venturing into the area of UC. This could be a very profitable venture; however, you will find that it is a very expensive business to get into, secondly, it can be very unpredictable–meaning that work is promised but often times when work is received you are given “the bottom of the barrel” especially if you are new to this market.

When we say the “bottom of the barrel” we are referring to areas that are very congested with utilities, i.e., water, gas, electricity, sewer, cable, and phone. If you do not take precaution to locate and expose these utilities correctly, you can accidently hit them while digging. When this happens, you might as well pack it in.

The high cost of insurance is also another challenge to consider. Insurance can run anyway from $4,000 per month plus. Please bear in mind also that this does not take into consideration the cost for hitting utilities.

Finally, in most cases your company will be a Sub Contractor to the Prime. It our experience to note that some Primes are very good at paying the subs but others absolutely refuses to do so. This makes for a stressful situation because the pay period is generally two weeks and sometimes a small business can go as much as two months without being paid. This is another large factor that keeps small businesses out of this market.

Bottom line, have plenty of finances available, if you plan on being in the UC business for an extended period of time.
